Hi! It's really easy. On the server-side, I have a C++ DLL that renders beautiful ClearType-esque text (found the algorithm on the internet somewhere). Then, I have a Silverlight-compatible web service which uses P/Invoke to render text and then sends it as a byte array to the Silverlight client. In fact, we send it as PNG because that's what Silverlight likes. The client thus takes a byte[] corresponding to the PNG of our text and creates a BitmapImage off of it. That's it!

As for your question regarding autoformatting and such, for that you can use FreeType+Pango or something similar. Not a problem, really :)
